5 Myths of weight loss

Over the years, a number of myths have developed regarding weight loss and what is healthy versus what's not. Being able to identify the truth from false beliefs will help you make the best possible dietary decisions in order to lose weight the right way and not damage your body in the process.

Starving to lose weight

Many people believe that you need to starve yourself in order to shed excess weight. Not only is this dangerous but it doesn't work. At some point you will need to eat and, when you do, you will gain all your weight back and, in many cases, end up weighing even more than you did to start with!

Snacking makes you fat

Snacking between meals can help you maintain healthy energy levels and you can even help your body lose weight. Provided, of course, that you don't reach for junk foods (i.e. chocolates and crisps) and select your snacks carefully with weight loss and nutrition in mind.

Weight loss pills are suitable for long term use
There are so many diet pills on the market that claim to work miracles. Not only are many of these pills dangerous and can have severe side effects but you are not advised to use them for long periods of time. As soon as you do stop using them, if you have not made some serious lifestyle changes, you will gain all that weight again.

Margarine is better than butter
While margarine and butter contain similar amounts of fat, the types of fat in each product differ. Butter contains saturated fat while margarine is high in trans fat which is extremely harmful to your health.

Carbohydrates make you fat
Excessive consumption can cause weight gain but, in the right quantities, carbs don't necessarily cause weight gain.
