Home beauty remedies to avoid

Thursday, May 14, 2020

If you are stuck at home and you feel like it's been forever since you last had some kind of beauty treatment, you're not alone. Many people around the world are trying various home beauty tricks and hacks. While some of these home beauty hacks may work, there are also a few that you should avoid or you could do more harm than good.

Lemon juice for dark spots
You may have heard that lemon juice can lighten your hair and dark spots on your face. Beware, however, the acidic properties can do more damage by making your skin even more sensitive to sunlight.

Exfoliating with baking soda
Exfoliating is an excellent way of ridding your body of old skin cells and obtaining a fabulous, fresh glow. There are many products that can be used for exfoliating purposes. Baking soda, however, is not one of them. When used in the kitchen, it creates an acidic environment that helps baked goods rise. Baking soda can affect the pH balance of your skin which can result in irritation as well as more severe damage.

Cinnamon for acne
Acne is known to have a number of causes. For some, acne comes and goes during their adolescent years. For others, it can stick around for longer or appear to go away only to return a few years later. No matter the case, one thing you never want to use for acne is cinnamon. While this spice has great flavour and health properties, it can cause severe skin irritation when applied directly.

Egg white facials
Before you start spreading egg on your face, just remember one thing: salmonella! Raw eggs pose a health risk and should not be consumed or applied to any part of your body. If you have tried this supposed hack, you may defend it by saying that your skin felt firmer. This might be true to a certain extent but it does not have a lasting effect and egg whites will not reduce your pores. All you are doing is risking your health.

Greek yogurt facials
This is quite a popular home beauty hack but it can easily leave you disappointed or worse. One of the main concerns is whether the yogurt has been contaminated in any way. Applying contaminated yogurt to your face can result in a nasty bacterial infection.

When it comes to at-home beauty tricks and hacks, remember that natural products are not always the best option. Yes, organic treatments are ideal but these treatments are specially designed and formulated for specific uses. There is a reason why you should not use hand or body lotion on your face, for example. Make sure that any products you use will suit your needs as well as your skin type. If you are using a product for the first time, test it out on the inner part of your forearm first. This will help you prevent any unpleasant surprises should your body react negatively to any of the ingredients.
