Getting off to a fresh start in the new year

With 2020 finally in the rearview mirror, it's time to let any and all negative experiences and start fresh. Here are some essential tips to help you kick start the year and get everything off to a positive start.

Being aware of your emotions as well as your reactions so that you can spot them before they get the better of you.

Express yourself
It is not good to keep your feelings inside. It's also not good to simply explode or vent in an unproductive manner. It is important to make sure that you keep these types of reactions in check. When expressing work problems to your partner or spouse, for example, remember that they are not the cause of these problems. So, avoid 'kicking the dog', so to speak.

Take time to think
Many of us lead fast-paced lives these days. This often results in speedy reactions which do not always have positive outcomes. So, before you act in a moment of anger or frustration, give yourself a moment to breathe and let the initial stress subside. You can make use of different forms of stress relief including exercise and meditation.

Physical health
Your body and mind are very much connected. Make sure that you take time out of your day to exercise. If you neglect your physical fitness and health, it will take a toll on your mind.

No matter how low you feel, make an effort to get out and meet up with friends. Even if you visit them or have them visit you. It is important that you do not isolate yourself. If you are not able to see one another face to face, video calls will have to do. They are not ideal but it is better than nothing.

Positive attitude
In so many cases, it really does come down to mind over matter. You can keep a journal and, each day, take the time to name at least three things that you are grateful for. A positive attitude at the beginning of the day is a great way to start. It's also helpful to read these positive notes before you go to bed so that you can end your day on a great note as well.
