The connection between physical pain and emotional wellness

Thursday, July 15, 2021

You may have already heard that there is a connection between the mind and body. This means that when one is affected negatively, the other will suffer too. Understanding this connection is important for treating physical and mental ailments alike.

Firstly, if you injure yourself, you will feel pain. If this pain is severe and lasts for a few days, weeks or even months, it will take a toll on your emotional state. The longer the pain lingers, the more emotionally affected you will feel. Physical pain can prevent you from being as active and productive as you would like and this can make you feel less motivated to even try to get anything done.

Another way in which the two are connected is when you are feeling emotionally drained or even during periods of grief. You become more sensitive physically and even the slightest discomfort can be perceived as severe pain. Your back or legs may hurt. You may even suffer from serious headaches or migraines. By addressing your emotional issues, you can deal with the physical pain at the same time.

Depending on the type of physical injury, you may find relief by scheduling regular massage therapy sessions. A sports massage, for instance, can help you recover quicker from sporting injuries. It will help get you back in action that much faster and reduce your time on the bench. Physiotherapy is also important for healing severe injuries like recovering after a broken bone. Always follow the instructions of your therapist in order to make the most of their treatment plan.
