Practical tips to help you quit smoking

Thursday, January 28, 2021

So many people promise to quit smoking in the new year. However, it's often easier said than done. There are so many unexpected hurdles that it's only a matter of time before the unprepared quitter lights up again. To keep your cravings at bay, here are some practical tips.

Find your why

It's not enough to say that you want to quit. You need a real and important reason. Whether it's for your health, money or any other reason, you need one that you can hold on to no matter what.

Replacement options

Nicotine gum and patches can help take the edge off while you are getting out of the habit of the physical habit. There is both a physical and mental aspect to quitting so it's important to make sure that you address them both in order to truly succeed.

There are medications that can be used to curb those cravings. Talk to your doctor about various treatment options and find out if any of them will suit you.

Pamper yourself

You may feel increased stress during this time which is why you need to take extra special care of yourself. Schedule some time away from it all and go get a manicure, pedicure, facial or massage. Do whatever it is that will make you feel good.

Avoid triggers

If you often find yourself craving a cigarette when drinking, you should avoid alcohol for now at least. As your cravings subside, you will be able to enjoy a drink or two from time to time without worrying about slipping up.

Keep busy

The busier you are, the less likely you are to think about lighting up. Keep busy with chores, cleaning or anything you can think of that will prevent you from smoking.

Set aside time each day or at least every other day for some exercise. Even light exercise like taking your dog for a walk is great. Fresh air, some natural sunlight and simply getting out of your home will do wonders for your mindset.

Healthy snacks

You will likely be looking for something to nibble so make sure that you have healthy snacks on hand. Celery sticks, carrots, fresh fruit and similar crunchy foods that take time to chew are all great!

Therapy and even hypnotherapy are great for helping you kick the habit. There are many people out there who simply cannot do it on their own and, fortunately, you don't have to! Schedule a meeting with a specialist to help you stop smoking today!

Remember, it's not about choosing one of these 'tricks' because there is no one method that works for everyone. In fact, it's most common that you will need to use several of the tips listed above, if not all of them. Remember, if you do slip up and have a cigarette, don't be too hard on yourself and don't give up. Start fresh the following day or even later that day and give it all you've got!
